Time Attack is one of the most exciting, pure forms of motorsport out there. Unlike traditional racing where drivers go wheel-to-wheel to cross the finish line first, Time Attack is a race purely against the clock. Think of it as the ultimate qualification session: drivers are spaced out on the track with one primary goal—to string together a single, absolutely perfect, blistering lap.
The sport originated in Japan during the mid-1980s when tuning shops and automotive magazines wanted a definitive way to prove which aftermarket builds were truly the fastest. They began meeting at local race tracks—most notably Tsukuba Circuit near Tokyo—to settle the score. Over the decades, it grew from an underground tuner subculture into a regulated global phenomenon.
Today, however, that phenomenon was at Brands Hatch for Tunerfest South. While we were sadly missing a couple of the Extreme Class cars, the track still provided a good spectacle of fast, precision driving. With Pro Drift and the Honda Racing Championship providing on-track support, and Colin Chapman Way and the lower paddock absolutely awash with modified builds and classic hot hatches, it was a great day to be there grabbing some snaps.
Amidst the wild wings and massive splitters, sometimes simplicity hits harder. You still can’t beat a tidy GSX-R for pure performance.
